  • The 10 Best Laser Measuring Tools

    1. Bosch Compact Blaze Laser Distance Measure – Best Overall

Bosch GLM 20 Compact Blaze Laser Distance Measure

The Bosch GLM 20 Compact Blaze Laser Distance Measure is exceptionally accurate. It measures up to 65 feet to within 1/8 of an inch of accuracy. It can measure in meters, feet, and inches, which should be plenty of options for most users. It is effortless to use. It requires a one-button operation. Just click it, and it’ll start measuring. It is small enough to fit into your pocket as well, so you can carry it around easily. The measuring is real-time, so it will adjust as you move it farther from the target or closer. The backlit display is straightforward to read, even in dark areas.

Furthermore, this laser measuring tool is relatively cheap, as well. It isn’t the most inexpensive, but it is cheaper than some other options. It’s exceptionally durable, so we expect that it should last a long time. It also stores your last measurement, which is always a nice touch. This feature keeps you from re-measuring over and over again should you forget the measurement.

With that said, this model is not designed for a professional. It is best for homeowners who just need to do some light measurements. Professionals who do lots of measuring should probably look elsewhere. All in all, we think this is the best laser measurement device available this year.

    Pros
    • One-button operation
    • Stores last measurement
    • Measures up to 65’
    • Accurate within 1/8 ”
    • Fits in your pocket
    Cons
    • Not heavy-duty

    2. CRAFTSMAN Laser Measure Tool – Best Value

    CRAFTSMAN CMHT77637 Laser Measure Tool

For those who want to save a bit of money, the CRAFTSMAN CMHT77637 Laser Measure Tool is a decent option. It has a 40-foot range. However, it is most accurate within 30 feet. At this smaller range, it is accurate within 1/4 of an inch. It has a lithium-ion battery that is rechargeable with a USB charger. Like many measuring tools high on our list, it can be operated with the press of a button. It has a limited lifetime warranty as well, though this only covers specific problems. You should read the full warranty before making your purchase.

Because Craftsman makes it, it is just about as durable as we would expect. Furthermore, it is relatively cheap for a Craftsman tool. It is one of the cheaper options on the market. This is one reason we consider it to be the best laser measuring tool for the money. For homeowners that don’t plan on measuring very much, this is an excellent option for you to consider.

We did like this laser measuring tool is relatively small. It is plenty small to fit into your pocket, allowing you to carry it around your workplace easily.

    Pros
    • Inexpensive
    • Limited lifetime warranty
    • Accurate within 1/4 ”
    • Measures up to 40’
    Cons
    • Somewhat less accurate than other options

    3. Leica DISTO D2 Laser Distance Measure – Premium Choice

Leica DISTO D2 Laser Distance Measure

At first glance, you’ll probably realize that the Leica DISTO D2 Laser Distance Measure is extremely expensive. It is much more expensive than most of the competition. However, if you’re a professional or just want to go all out on a laser distance measurement tool, this is the best laser tape measure. It is accurate within 1/16 of an inch, far more accurate than most other options on the market. Furthermore, it can measure up to 330 feet while maintaining this accuracy. It is Bluetooth, so it can connect to your chosen software tool and transfer all measurements over to it.

It comes equipped with the Pythagoras function for indirect height and width measurements. This is a rare feature, so if you need it, you should consider purchasing this model. It has a temperature range of 14° Fahrenheit to 122° Fahrenheit. This allows it to be used in most situations and climates, perfect for those who rely on this tool. We also loved that it has an innovative automatic end piece to reach corners.

    Pros
    • Saves the last 10  measurements
    • Accurate to 1/16”
    • Measures up to 330’
    • Bluetooth
    • Usable from 14° -122° Fahrenheit
    Cons
    • Expensive

    4. Tacklife HD60 Classic Laser Measure

    Tacklife HD60 Classic Laser Measure

Compared to our last review, the Tacklife HD60 Classic Laser Measure is much less expensive. However, it is not the cheapest option on the market. It is about in the middle of the pack as far as the cost goes. It has an accuracy of 1/16 of an inch and has a range of up to 196 feet. This is suitable for most homeowners and even some professionals. It can switch through multiple measurement systems, including inches and meters.

It is hardy and compact so that it can fit in your pocket. It comes with a carrying pouch for extra batteries, so you’ll always have some on hand if you need to change them. It has a large LCD screen that is decently easy to read, though it is not the best on this list. It stores up to 30 groups of data and can automatically calculate the area and volume of any given space. It can also do simple calculations, like addition and subtraction, as well as the Pythagoras theorem. It has a built-in calculator.

All these extra functions can make it a bit more complicated to use. However, after you figure it out, this measuring tool can do it all.

    Pros
    • Accurate to 1/16”
    • Measures up to 196’
    • Able to do necessary calculations
    Cons
    • Not rechargeable
    • Difficult to use

    5. DBPOWER Digital Laser Measure

    DBPOWER 60M2 Digital Laser Measure

The DBPOWER 60M2 Digital Laser Measure is relatively inexpensive. It is one of the cheapest options on this list. It has plenty of features, including calculating area, length, and volume. It has more features than many of the laser measuring tools on this list. However, it does have quite a few buttons, which can make it somewhat challenging to figure out. If you just need to measure a distance, this tool can be a little frustrating to use, which is why we rated it so low on our list.

The measurement is done in real-time. So, as you move the laser around, the numbers on the screen will change. You do not have to press the measurement button continuously. It can measure up to 197 feet, which should be plenty for most homeowners.

It is accurate within 1/13 of an inch. This isn’t the most accurate option on this list. However, it is much more accurate than most options currently on the market. The LCD screen is designed for low-light conditions and is quite readable, though there are quite a few numbers on the screen at once.

    Pros
    • Measures up to 197’
    • Accurate within 1/13”
    • Can do calculations
    Cons
    • Somewhat difficult to use
    • Confusing display screen

    6. DTAPE DT100 Digital Laser Tape Measure

DTAPE DT100 Digital Laser Tape Measure

The DTAPE DT100 Digital Laser Tape Measure isn’t a lousy laser measure. However, it is not our favorite, which is why it landed lower on our list. It is accurate up to 1/16 of an inch, which is about as accurate as it gets. The range is up to 328 feet, which is a bit more than most other options we’ve mentioned. Furthermore, the LCD backlight is reliable and makes working in dark spaces much more comfortable. However, there are quite a few numbers on the screen at any one time, and the font is not the easiest to read.

It can store 20 different data sets for more than most of the other measurement tools on our list. It also has an auto-shutoff function and various other functions that you would expect from a high-quality laser measuring tool.

This is one of the few laser measurement tools we reviewed that was also waterproof. In many circumstances, this likely won’t be necessary. However, for some people, this may be an essential feature. It is also quite portable and encased in a hard rubber casing to improve your grip and prevent dropping.

    Pros
    • Accurate to 1/16”
    • Measures up to 328’
    • Remembers 20 different data sets
    Cons
    • Doesn’t necessarily measure as far as advertised
    • Not accurate at extended distances

    7. SKIL 2-In-1 Laser Measurement Tool

SKIL ME981901 2-In-1 Laser Measurement Tool

For some people, the SKIL ME981901 2-In-1 Laser Measurement Tool might work. However, its range is pretty low. It only measures up to 100 feet. It does measure in real-time, which means you can see the numbers change as you walk around. It can calculate the area, but this is about it. It also has a laser-level function, which eliminates the need for another tool. It is rechargeable and plugs into a micro-USB charging port. This is quite convenient and is better than having to change the batteries regularly. You can save your measurements for later if you choose.

The LCD screen is somewhat challenging to read. There are many numbers on it at once, and some of them are relatively small, which can make them challenging to see in some situations. The battery seems to last pretty long, so it should last through most projects without recharging.

This laser measurement tool is only flat on one side. This makes it challenging to keep it flat against certain surfaces when measuring on that side. We found this to be an annoying defect that shouldn’t belong in a measurement tool like this.

    Pros
    • Accurate to 1/8”
    • Rechargeable
    • Also works like a laser-level
    Cons
    • Difficult to read
    • Not flat on all sides

    8. InLife Backlit LCD Laser Measure

    InLife Backlit LCD Laser Measure

The InLife Backlit LCD Laser Measure is alright. It has many of the features you’d expect. It can change between a few different units. It measures almost instantly and is accurate within 2 mm. This does not transfer quickly into a fraction, but it’d be something like 7/10 of an inch. This is decently accurate, but not nearly as accurate as some of the other options we’ve reviewed. It does come with a portable and durable carrying pouch. This is also one of the few measurement tools on the market that is waterproof.

This laser measure can also do many different calculations. It can do Pythagorean measurements, volume measurements, and can add and subtract. It is backlit, but not very easy to read. There are many different numbers on the screen at one time, making it difficult to decipher.

There were a few things we did not like about this laser measurement tool, though. It reads in decimals, not fractions. For smaller measurements, this is less of a problem. However, for more complicated decimals, this can be confusing. For most Americans, this simple makes this measurement tool very frustrating to use. This is the main reason we rated it so low on our list.

    Pros
    • Accurate to 2 mm
    • Can do basic calculations
    Cons
    • Does not measure in fractions
    • Difficult  to read

    9. General Tools TS01 Laser Measure

    General Tools TS01 Laser Measure

Out of all those we reviewed, the General Tools TS01 Laser Measure is one of our least favorites. It can do some necessary calculations, like square footage, volume, and height. It also does real-time measuring, so the numbers will change as you move around. It has a backlit display that is easy to read in the dark. But many different measurements are shown on the screen, which can lead to some confusion.

It can measure in many different units, including feet and inches. It is very accurate up to 100 feet and is accurate down to 1/16 of an inch. It is compact and portable, just like these tools should be.

There are many reports of this tool not being as accurate as advertised, however. It seems to measure a bit shorter than it is. While this tool does come with an app, the app is not very good in the least. The pouch is not exceptionally high-quality either, and some customers reported not receiving the pouch at all!

    Pros
    • Can do calculations
    Cons
    • Not as accurate as advertised
    • Measures up to 100’
    • Not a very high-quality pouch

    10. TECCPO TDLM21P Laser Measure

    TECCPO TDLM21P Laser Measure

Though the TECCPO TDLM21P Laser Measure likely is not the absolute worst out there, it did land on the bottom of our list. It has a range of 196 feet and is accurate to 1/16 inches. This is very similar to the other laser measures on our list. It can do quite a few calculations, like many of the laser measures on this list. It is also not expensive and is priced around the same as the other inexpensive laser measures on this list.

However, there were quite a few things we didn’t necessarily like about it. The fraction numbers are very tiny on display. This makes them quite challenging to read. We can see how it would be straightforward to misread the fraction, which is the last thing you want. It is designed for a young person with perfect vision. If that doesn’t describe you, then you will likely have trouble reading it. It is also somewhat hard to use. Each button does different things depending on whether you tap it or hold it. This can be a bit more complex than we would have liked it otherwise.

    Pros
    • Measures up to 196’
    Cons
    • Not as accurate as other options
    • Small numbers
    • Hard to use

Buyer’s Guide – Best Laser Measuring Tools

All laser measurement tools do about the same thing. They have a small laser beam that exits one side and measures the distance until the light ends. However, beyond that, things can get quite complicated. They have many different features, levels of accuracy, and readability.

    Range

Different tools have different ranges. Some can measure over 300 feet; others cannot even measure up to 100 feet. A laser’s light beam weakens as it projects further away. To measure long distances, the laser measurer needs a powerful light beam. Cheaper laser measurers often have weaker lasers because they were made on a budget. Because of this, the distance a laser measurer can reach is mostly tied to the price of the tool.

If you want a measurer that can reach a long distance, you’re going to pay for it. If you only need to measure a small area, we recommend purchasing a cheaper tool. There is no reason to spend the extra money if you don’t measure anything 300 feet away.

    Accuracy

Some tools are accurate. Others? Not so much.

Usually, the accuracy is tied to the price. However, this isn’t always the case. Some cheap laser measurement tools are entirely accurate, and other expensive options are hardly accurate at all. Generally, you want to get the most accurate tool possible. After all, if the tool is off by a lot, it isn’t going to be particularly useful.

However, you don’t necessarily need the most accurate option on the list. Unless your job or projects call for complete accuracy, you don’t necessarily need a super-accurate model. Consider the kind of work you do when choosing how accurate you need your model to be.

person using CRAFTSMAN CMHT77637 Laser Measure Tool

    Calculation Options

Most tools can do calculations as well. They’re tiny calculators. Many can take the measurements they’ve made and calculate things like the volume. Others can calculate the height of something based on other measurements. Most can do basic addition and subtraction, though some do not have any calculation power at all. It just depends on the intent of the manufacturer when they are designed to tool.

If calculations are essential, then you should check to ensure that the tool you purchase can do necessary calculations. Their ability to calculate it does not seem to be tied to their price, either. You can find very cheap options that can do plenty of calculations. So, don’t let the cost tear you away from finding the perfect tool.

    Ease of Use

Some are very easy to use and only require pressing a single button. Others have lots of different buttons. Sometimes, these buttons are useful for doing different functions and unlocking new features. However, you have to figure out how to use them first! This is easier said than done in some cases. We recommend choosing the easiest to use the option on the market. The last thing you want to do is have to figure out how to use a laser measurement tool, which should be extremely easy to use by definition.
